Dr. Miguel Nunez is a General Surgery Resident at the University of California, San Francisco with a strong commitment to advancing healthcare equity for marginalized and underserved populations. He grew up in Long Beach, California and he completed his undergraduate studies at the University of California, Los Angeles. At the University of California Los Angeles he earned a degree in Molecular, Cellular, and Developmental Biology. He subsequently attended medical school at the University of California San Francisco where he earned his MD with Distinction. During medical school, he conducted a dedicated research year supported by a NIAAA Diversity Supplement Award, investigating the use of long-term normothermic liver perfusion to enhance donor organ quality. As part of the National Clinical Scholars Program, he aims to identify and develop strategies to better support vulnerable populations throughout the transplant continuum. His additional research interests include evaluating the effects of Medicaid expansion on the care of patients with end-stage liver and kidney disease, translational research that will expand access to transplantation, and disparities in vascular health. His goal is to become an academic surgeon and his career interests are in transplant or vascular surgery. Outside of medicine, he enjoys playing and watching sports, exploring new restaurants in the city, and spending time with his partner.

Research Interests: Developing targeted interventions to enhance equitable access to organ transplantation for historically underrepresented populations and to improve post-transplant clinical outcomes.
