Hilary Seligman
Program Director: Medicine

Hilary Seligman MD MAS has been Program Director for the National Clinician Scholars Program since 2019, when NCSP first came to UCSF in the current era of the program. She is a seasoned mentor who adores supporting scholars in developing their professional skills in order to succeed within and beyond academics.

Trained as a general internist, Hilary is Professor of Medicine in Department of Medicine and holds faculty affiliations in UCSF’s Division of General Internal Medicine, Department of Epidemiology and Biostatistics, Institute for Health Policy Studies, ARC for Health, and Clinical and Translational Sciences Institute.

Hilary is a nationally recognized expert on food insecurity and its impact on health outcomes across the life course. A particular interest of hers is in activating healthcare as a partner in addressing food insecurity as a risk factor for chronic disease and a challenge for chronic disease self-management. She does this work through evidence generation, policy analysis, and thought leadership. She has decades of experience in community-engaged research, clinical research, and quasi-experimental policy analysis, funded by federal agencies (NIH, CDC, USDA) as well as foundations and other partners.

Hilary has directed NOPREN (the CDC’s Nutrition and Obesity Policy Research and Evaluation Network) for the last ten years. Her team runs Vouchers for Veggies, a large produce prescription program, and provides technical assistance and support to USDA-funded GusNIP produce prescription programs across the country. Hilary also serves as Deputy Scientific Lead for the American Heart Association’s Health Care by Food initiative.
