José I. Gutierrez Jr., PhD, FNP-BC is an Assistant Professor in the Department of Family Health Care Nursing at UCSF and an Associate Program Director for the National Clinician Scholars Program (NCSP) at UCSF. As an NCSP alum, José’s work focuses on improving the health and health care of historically excluded and veteran populations whose needs are often shaped by restrictive health policies, structural inequities, and social marginalization. José’s research uses market research techniques and stated preference methods, including discrete choice experiments and conjoint analysis, to better understand patient preferences and inform the design and delivery of care. José is particularly interested in identifying approaches that strengthen the continuum of care in sexual and reproductive health, HIV treatment and prevention, and substance use interventions. Across these areas, José’s goal is to generate patient-informed evidence that can improve access, acceptability, and implementation of services for communities that have historically been underserved. In the role with NCSP, José helps support the program’s mission of preparing nurse- and physician-scholars to serve as change agents through policy-relevant research and meaningful partnerships. José is especially committed to fostering training environments that encourage scholarly rigor, practical impact, and interdisciplinary collaboration.
