Rahael Borchers, MD

Dr. Rahael Cherian Borchers is an internal medicine physician passionate about providing holistic patient care at an individual level, and advancing health equity at a societal level. Rahael has spent over a decade volunteering with refugees and undocumented immigrants, supporting resettlement in multiple U.S. cities. She studied Political Science and International Studies at Davidson College, and worked with non-profits in D.C. Patients, providers, and public health professionals at SF General Hospital and the SF Department of Public Health helped inspire her to combine her interests in direct service and advocacy work through a career in medicine. She trained at the University of Pennsylvania for medical school and residency, where she continued to partner with and learn from immigrant communities.  As a National Clinician Scholar at UCSF, Rahael plans to focus her research on informing interventions that would improve access to care for immigrants, and build skills to become a physician-public health practitioner. At a time of hostility towards immigrants at a national level, she feels privileged to belong to a community dedicated to studying and dismantling structural racism.

Research Interests: Investigating sociopolitical determinants of health for immigrants, and promoting evidence-based policies that would improve access to quality preventative healthcare.
