Dr. Covinsky is a Professor of Medicine in the UCSF Division of Geriatrics and Director of the UCSF Older Americans Independence Center.  His research focuses on the determinants and outcomes of disability in older persons.  His work has identified the role of hospitalization as a precipitant of disability and examined the medical and psychosocial factors that accelerate disability.  His work has focused on the development of prognostic and risk adjustment models in older persons, with a focus on the importance of geriatric measures as determinants of risk.
