Dr. Pranav Kaul is an Emergency Medicine physician focused on expanding access to acute care services for vulnerable patient populations and advocating for policies that recognize health as a human right. Originally from Oklahoma, he completed his undergraduate degree in International Affairs and Global Public Health at George Washington University in Washington, DC. During that time, he worked in various roles both on the Joint Commission Federal Relations team and as a political consultant for global health and gender equity NGOs. After graduation, he went on to establish a social venture focused on urban farming in critical access food deserts in the Philadelphia/Camden metro area. He also worked as a health care strategy consultant at the Advisory Board Company before serving as an independent strategic consultant for the GW multispecialty physician practice group while in medical school at George Washington University. When he wasn’t studying, his time was spent serving as Executive Director of the student-run free clinic and developing a strategy for expanding specialty and primary care services in historically underserved Southeast DC which cemented his passion for addressing health disparities. He continued to Chicago where he completed his residency in Emergency Medicine at Northwestern, serving as Chief Resident, and was recognized as an Outstanding Teacher by the Feinberg School of Medicine. During this period, he spent considerable time with the American College of Emergency Physicians leading several resident groups to draft and pass resolutions supporting reproductive health, gender-affirming care, and harms reduction approaches for opioid use disorder and speaking on universal health care on the national stage. As an NCSP Fellow at UCSF, Dr. Kaul seeks to investigate novel care delivery models for acute psychiatric care to address disparities in boarding and restraint use, particularly for patients of color and patients without private insurance. Outside of work, you can find him exploring new restaurants/bars with his friends, playing pickleball or soccer, cooking for friends, re-watching The West Wing, or travelling to a different city.
